Thanksgiving on the Olympic Peninsula

Spending Thanksgiving on the Olympic Peninsula with family or friends? Be sure to bring some Washington State wine to the table. Olympic Peninsula wineries offer a surprising variety of wines, one of which is sure to complement your Thanksgiving meal.

Drink wine on the Olympic Peninsula over Thanksgiving weekend.

Once the feast has been consumed and the table cleared, you may find yourself wondering what to do. Wine tasting is a terrific activity at this time of year, when the weather can be blustery even in the Olympic Rain Shadow. It’s especially fun to go wine tasting with a group of friends and/or family. Try the same wine and enjoy discussing its nose and legs, or try different wines and steal sips. You can find wines to drink with Thanksgiving left-overs, and wines to store until Christmas and New Years. Why not pick up a few bottles of Washington State wine to offer as holiday gifts while you’re at it?

Consider touring all the Olympic Peninsula wineries over the weekend. Visit Washington State wineries and cideries near Port Townsend on one day, and in Port Angeles and Sequim on another day. Stop for a leisurely lunch while you’re out and about, after all, the holiday season is here, and it’s time to celebrate.

Celebrate the Harvest at Olympic Peninsula Wineries

Celebrate the fall harvest with Washington State Wines.

Pull your favorite wine glass out of the cupboard and bring it with you to the 2010 Harvest Olympic Peninsula Winery Tour. Celebrate the fall harvest with Washington State Wines and Ciders and a sampling of fresh, delicious, food. Participants will be able to sample new releases and try old favorites.

For an added bit of fun, we’re adding a scavenger hunt this year. At each of the seven participating Washington State wineries and ciders you’ll be given a clue – find the item it describes and get a sticker on your card. If you find all the items and have the stickers to prove it, you’ll have a chance at wining a culinary gift basket.

Below are a few Harvest Festival details for each Olympic Peninsula winery / cidery.

Welcome Eaglemount Wine and Cider

Olympic Peninsula Wineries Association welcomes Eaglemount Wine and Cider of Port Townsend to our group of Washington State wineries. Eaglemount Wine and Cider is located off Eaglemount Road, on a beautiful old homestead near the junction of Highway 20 and Highway 101 at Discovery Bay.

Eaglemount Cider of Port Townsend.

Eaglemount is known in the area for their several varieties of outstanding ciders: Homestead Cider (made of heirloom apples), Cyser (hard cider sweetened with honey), Ginger Cider (Homestead Cider and organic ginger), and Perry Cider (a slightly sweet pear cider). Their Washington state wines are also quite popular: grapes come from Arianses Vineyard near Mattawa, WA, which is known for producing outstanding wine grapes. They’re then aged underground in American French, and Hungarian oak barrels.

Eaglemount Wine and Cider has joined just in time to participate in our 2010 Harvest Olympic Peninsula Winery Tour, which takes place November 13 and 14, from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. It’s an ideal place to stop when traveling between the Washington State wineries of Port Angeles and Sequim and those in Port Townsend and Chimacum.

Cookies and Wine

Camaraderie Cellars, one of our Washington State Wineries on the Olympic Peninsula, has found the perfect cookie to pair with a glass of Washington State Wine. Read on for the recipe, and hope that they’ll be served during the upcoming Harvest Wine Tour, November 13 and 14, 21010.

BLEU CHEESE COOKIES

1/2 cup cream cheese, room temp

1 cup butter, at room temperature

¼ tsp. cayenne pepper

1 ½ cups crumbled blue cheese

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 cups crisp rice cereal, such as Rice Krispies

2 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. With a mixer on medium speed, cream together cream cheese and butter until light and fluffy. Add cayenne, blue cheese, flour, rice cereal, and bacon (if using) and beat on medium-low speed until well blended. The dough will be stiff.

2. Roll 1 tablespoon portions into balls and place slightly apart on baking sheets. Flatten each ball with a fork.

3. Bake until cookies are golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes.

4. Enjoy with a glass of your favorite Washington State Wine.

Yield: Makes about 4 dozen cookies.

Tickets for this self guided tour are available in advance or at the door on a first come basis for $25.00 and entitle you to complimentary wine tastings and appetizers at each winery during the weekend. A tasting fee of $5.00 per person per winery will apply to non ticketed visitors.

Sailing Adventure in Port Townsend

Fall means wind, and wind means sailing. It’s an exciting time to take a sailboat out from Port Townsend, on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, so why not run away for the weekend and do just that? After a day on the water, head to one of the Washington State wineries in Port Townsend for a little wine tasting – it will help warm you from the inside out.

Run Away to Port Townsend and enjoy sailing with the Port Townsend Schooner Company.

The Port Townsend Schooner Company runs sailings out of Point Hudson Marina in Port Townsend aboard their 59′ traditionally rigged Pinky Schooner, Pleiades. They specialize in two-hour tours of the Port Townsend Bay but will also make longer journeys to Protection Island, out in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, or beyond. You may make arrangements for full day sailings if you like, to simply let them take you where they will. Once you board, sit back and enjoy views of the historic waterfront town of Port Townsend and the Olympic Mountains rising beyond, or roll up your sleeves and relax. The choice is yours.

Should you decide to bring a picnic on board with you, consider stopping by one of the three wineries in Port Townsend and Chimacum for a bottle of Washington State wine or cider: FinnRiver Cidery in Chimacum has terrific hard cider; FairWinds Winery features a lovely white Burgundy, Aligote, as well as a tasty Lemberger; and Sorenson Cellars has a lovely 2007 Viognier that goes well with dried fruits and chèvre – perfect for a sailing picnic.

Biking and Wine Tasting on the Olympic Peninsula

Looking for a reason to leave the city and head to the Olympic Peninsula? How about a bike ride on the Olympic Discovery Trail?

The Olympic Discovery Trail currently stretches from the Jamestown S’Kallam Tribal Center in Blyn (about 6 miles south of Sequim) to Ediz Hook in Port Angeles. Much of it follows an old railroad route. It runs between Highway 101 and Sequim Bay and alongside the Strait of Juan de Fuca in Port Angeles. In the future, this trail will stretch from Port Townsend to the coast of Washington by La Push.

Washington State Wineries of the Olympic Peninsula support the completion of Olympic Discovery Trail. It provides a safe alternative to road biking, while connecting many communities on the north Olympic Peninsula. (more…)

Fun Film Festival in Port Townsend

Each fall, after summer crowds have thinned and locals have bid farewell to the last of the wooden boats, an expectant air lingers in Port Townsend. Summer may be over, but festivities are not. There is still something to anticipate: the Port Townsend Film Festival.A small town connects with the world.

The 2010 Port Towsend Film Festival takes place September 24 – 26 at several venues around town. The heart of the festival is The Rose Theatre, a historic theater on Taylor Street. Straw bales are set up each evening in front of The Rose for outdoor screenings, and a beer garden makes the mood complete. Locals and visitors fill the street to watch the night sky come alive; children bundled in strollers stare at the screen with big eyes until sleep overtakes them. It is a magical experience.

Avid film buffs trot from The Rose to the Pope Marine building at the end of town, or up the steps to the Uptown Theatre. Screenings run all day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and most films show at least twice. Documentaries, feature films, and classics fill the program – something for every cinematic preference. Remember to take time out and rest your eyes from time to time; we suggest trip to one of the Washington State Wineries in Port Townsend.

The community of Port Townsend is warmer and more welcoming than ever during the Film Festival. Come see for yourself. While there, relax with a glass or two of Washington State Wine, and visit Sorenson Cellars, FairWinds Winery, and FinnRiver Farm and Cidery.
